Two plants with the same tonnage requirement can need two completely different cooling towers. A pharmaceutical plant next to a residential area is limited by noise. A foundry running near-boiling process water is limited by heat tolerance. A cost-driven utility retrofit is limited by budget and maintenance simplicity. GEM builds two tower frame families -- GCT and SCT -- each offered in variants engineered around exactly one of these constraints, so the tower is matched to the actual limiting factor instead of over- or under-specifying a generic unit.
GCT and SCT are two distinct structural platforms; each is then built out in High-Temperature, Quiet and Heavy-Duty versions (SCT also has a standard cost-focused base model). Picking a family is mostly about which platform your site/installer is already standardized on or which capacity band you need -- the variant (H / Quiet / HH) is what actually determines the tower's operating envelope.
Where inlet water temperature is the limiting factor -- process cooling loops running hotter than a standard tower is rated for -- the GCT-H Series and SCT-H are built to handle water up to 65°C using ABS fill packs (which tolerate higher temperatures than standard PVC fill) and a belt-drive fan arrangement that trades a little maintenance simplicity for better power efficiency at high load.
Where the limiting factor is the neighbours, not the heat -- hospitals, residential-adjacent plants, commercial buildings, or any site with a strict noise ordinance -- the GCT Quiet Series and SCT Quiet are engineered down to roughly 74 dBA, using a belt-drive fan and fan-stack/fan-deck design specifically to cut operating noise, while still delivering power-saving performance.
Where the tower needs to survive a genuinely tough environment -- foundries, large-scale continuous-process plants, heavy industry -- the GCT-HH Series and SCT-HH are rated up to 80°C, again on ABS fill, with an ABS or aluminium sprinkler system and U-PVC water distribution piping built for rugged, high-thermal-load duty.
Not every installation is constrained by heat, noise, or ruggedness -- sometimes the priority is simply the lowest total cost of ownership. The base SCT model is built for exactly that: a compact design, low maintenance cost, and multiple capacity options from 100 TR up to 300+ TR, without the added engineering (and cost) of the H, Quiet or HH variants.
| Variant | Best for | Key spec | GEM products |
|---|---|---|---|
| High-Temp (H) | Hot process loops | Up to 65°C, ABS fills | GCT-H, SCT-H |
| Quiet | Hospitals, commercial, noise limits | Up to ~74 dBA | GCT Quiet, SCT Quiet |
| Heavy-Duty (HH) | Foundries, large-scale plants | Up to 80°C | GCT-HH, SCT-HH |
| Standard | Cost-driven, general duty | 100-300+ TR, compact | SCT |
Every variant is ISO 9001:2015 certified and made in India. If your requirement is really about footprint and cell configuration rather than heat/noise/ruggedness, see our Square Cooling Tower guide for single-cell vs multi-cell sizing.
GCT and SCT are two separate GEM tower platforms, each available in High-Temp, Quiet and Heavy-Duty engineered variants (SCT also offers a standard cost-focused base model). The variant you choose is what determines the tower's temperature rating, noise level or ruggedness -- the platform choice is more about capacity band and site standardization.
GEM's Quiet variants (GCT-Quiet, SCT-Quiet) are engineered down to roughly 74 dBA using a belt-drive fan and fan-stack/fan-deck design, making them suitable for hospitals, commercial buildings and other noise-sensitive sites.
The GCT-HH and SCT-HH variants are rated for process water up to 80°C, with ABS fill and ABS/aluminium sprinkler systems built for rugged, high-thermal-load environments like foundries.
