A square cooling tower is a rectangular-frame, crossflow-style industrial cooling tower: hot process water is distributed across the top of a fill pack while air is drawn horizontally through it by an induced-draft fan. The square/rectangular casing makes it easy to bolt several identical cells side by side, which is why this is the design most manufacturers reach for once a plant's cooling load outgrows a single small unit.
It does the same basic job as any other cooling tower -- removing waste heat from condenser water, chillers or a process heat exchanger by evaporating a small percentage of the circulating water -- but the square/multi-cell layout is specifically about scaling that job up cleanly as a plant grows.
GEM builds square towers in two structural materials, and the right one depends on scale and site conditions rather than performance alone:
A single cell is the right answer when one tower comfortably covers the plant's peak heat load with some margin for a hot day. Multi-cell (two, three or more identical cells sharing a common basin and header) becomes the right answer once any of the following applies:

If your process doesn't need a square/crossflow footprint specifically, it's worth comparing against GEM's Bottle Cooling Tower (a lightweight FRP round design for smaller, single-unit loads) or Cross Flow Cooling Tower (closed-circuit design that keeps the process fluid isolated from the open evaporative circuit) before deciding.

FRP is lighter, corrosion-free and faster to install, and covers the great majority of installations. Concrete/RCC construction is generally reserved for the largest multi-cell banks, where it works out more economical and easier to service long-term.
Choose multi-cell when the load exceeds a practical single-cell size, when the plant cannot afford a total cooling outage during maintenance, or when future capacity expansion is expected.
