Air pulled into a compressor always carries water vapour. Compressing that air concentrates the moisture, and as the compressed air cools downstream -- in pipework, filters, or at the point of use -- that vapour condenses into liquid water. Left untreated, it corrodes pipework and pneumatic components, washes lubrication out of cylinders and valves, freezes in outdoor lines, and contaminates any process where the air itself touches the product (food, pharma, electronics, paint spraying). A compressed air dryer exists to pull that moisture out before it becomes a problem, and there are two fundamentally different ways to do it.
A refrigerated dryer runs compressed air through a refrigeration circuit -- essentially a small air conditioner built for compressed air rather than room air. Cooling the air forces the water vapour in it to condense into liquid, which is then separated out and drained away before the air is reheated slightly and sent onward. This gets the air's pressure dew point down to roughly +2°C to +7°C, which is more than dry enough for the great majority of general industrial and workshop compressed air use, and it does the job with comparatively low running cost and simple maintenance.

A desiccant dryer takes a different approach: instead of cooling the air, it passes it through a bed of moisture-absorbing material (desiccant). GEM's heatless desiccant dryers use twin towers -- while one bed is actively drying the air stream, the other is being regenerated by a small portion of already-dried air (purge air) flowing back through it in reverse, stripping the moisture back out. The towers then swap roles on a timed cycle. Because the drying happens through adsorption rather than refrigeration, desiccant dryers reach far lower dew points -- down to -40°C, or -80°C with molecular sieve media -- which is what pharmaceutical, food, electronics and other moisture-critical processes typically require.

For general workshop or pneumatic tool use, a refrigerated dryer's +2 to +7°C dew point is normally sufficient. Pharmaceutical, food, electronics and other processes where the air itself contacts the product typically require a desiccant dryer's much lower dew point, down to -40°C.
Desiccant dryers generally cost more to run because regenerating the desiccant bed consumes a portion of already-compressed (purge) air. That trade-off is only worth it when the process genuinely needs the much lower dew point a desiccant dryer delivers.
Yes -- some plants run a refrigerated dryer for general plant air and a smaller desiccant dryer downstream, dedicated to one moisture-critical process line, rather than drying the entire plant's air to the strictest requirement.
